Hello, I am running my Bot User:SpaceBirdyBot as interwikibot on is.wikt (and de,es,pt,ga,af,fo,nah, scn,nl,sv,ro) lately because not all links are catched by the current active bots there. If You are interested I can set my bot to run here also.

I am using SVN pywikipedia (latest) and run it using

Bot flag request

Bot is written to use the Mediawiki API, which is much more effective than the wikipedia pybot framework; it does use the framework module for language links, to stay up with changes in wikt policies (that are included there, some are not!).

Its primary function is to keep all the en.wikt links up to date, here it will be adding reciprocal links to the en.wikt when a link is added there; it is generally a good idea to keep these symmetrical. This is part of a project to develop interwiki code specifically for the wiktionaries. It also adds any other valid links it has found and removes any known to be invalid.

For more information, please see en:User:Interwicket and subpages.

It has done a number of tests here, in a test mode where it makes edits only once every few hours (on average). Carsrac 18:59, 1 novembar 2009 (UTC)

Ja бих хтео одвратити од давања флага овому боту, jер његов поседник га jе посебно удесио овако да би бот брисал везе ка српскохрватскому викиречнику ([1], [2]). Због тога jа бих препоручио дати флаг, након што Robert Ullmann буде укинул брисање веза ка sh.wikt од свог бота, али сумњам да ће се то догодити скоро, jер поседник jе љути противник српскохрватског jезика (види Wiktionary:Votes/pl-2009-06/Unified Serbo-Croatian). Bogorm 09:05, 10 decembar 2009 (UTC)

One should also note that the SC vote on Wiktionary (and the vote itself was not whether to allow SC language sections, but whether to obliterate B/C/S/M sections with the presence of merged ones, so if you voted against that proposal that doesn't necessarily mean that you're "against" SC language per se;) was the primary cause of this disruptive behavior of Interwicket: Ullmann intentionally modified bot to remove sh: interwiki links as a form of "revenge" against me :)
So yeah I agree: we should allow all interwiki bots except ones that deliberately promote fascistoid segregation of wikiprojects on the basis of owners' personal (psuedo-)political convictions. So that's a big NO from me. --Ivan Štambuk 12:01, 12 decembar 2009 (UTC)
A local bot flag is no longer needed. This is a global bot, and this wiki recently enabled global bots. —Pathoschild 15:04:13, 19 april 2010 (UTC)

Starting uredi

Let's talk here... I gave to Cabrilo bureaucrat status and to Francis admin status (I don't think that there is a sense that non-native speaker has bureaucrat rights, but if two of you think different, I'll give to Francis bureaucrat permissions). --Millosh 19:21, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

BTW, do you have some plan or you just started with inserting words? --Millosh 19:21, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I have a large corpus of English to Serbo-Croatian (and vice versa, although still unchecked) translations. These are crude though, no part-of-speech tagging, likely many mistakes, etc. Francis has a lot of inflections and lexical information on words in different languages. He will tell you more about them. These are all very complete entries (except for the meaning). You can see some of the examples that we have already added in this fashion. Will you be in Zagreb, at the Open Translation conference? If yes, that would be a perfect opportunity to discuss how to merge all the info. The two of us could also meet in Belgrade sometime if that suits you better (but both Francis and I will be in Zagreb from 28th November). Do you have a plan on how to make mediawiki definition-centric? This could also be a good point to discuss when (if) we meet. --Cabrilo 20:07, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
As Dejan says, in Apertium we have quite a bit of information on inflection in quite a few languages... ranging from a few lemmata, to ~30,000 lemmata (in the case of Italian), or ~25,000 lemmata (in the case of Polish). These are being expanded by the day (well, some are). Basically, I'd like to make these useful, and Wiktionary seems like a good bet. - Francis Tyers 20:20, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I am in Zagreb from Tuesday. (BTW, Dejan, do you want to come with Brane and I? Train ticket will be cheaper; we may find some bed for you if you don't have it for Tuesday/Wednesday night.) So, I think that we should talk there what should we do... There are a lot of interesting things to talk about, including possibility to work together with young Serbian linguists... --Millosh 21:25, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the offer, I'd love to, but I have to be in Belgrade on Tuesday for work and can't leave before Wednesday. If you have some time this coming weekend, we could meet for some "preliminary" (I love that word) chitchat. Well anyway, I'm in Belgrade full time now, so whenever... :( --Cabrilo 08:54, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Generally, we should make database and then we should add words with bot. Also, we should work on the localization of the interface, including conversion between scripts and standards... --Millosh 21:25, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

I am thinking now and I realized that we should use categories as meanings. Maybe to ask for another "category" type, which would be "meaning" (and to leave contemporary categories for other things). What do you think? (Actually, categories and meanings are the same in the way how it is organized in MediaWiki [category may have more then one supercategory].) --Millosh 21:30, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
There are issues like this: mainly about user experience. We would definitely need to add a "supercategory", but also need to think about how would users search through words, how to display results and how to allow future editors to browse through meanings when they are adding words (it would probably be very hard to find a predefined meaning, so we would end up with people adding differently worded meanings for the same thing, etc.). A few usage scenarios:
  1. A person searches for a word that has three different, but very similar meanings (A, B and C), and he wants English and Albanian translations of these words. English has one corresponding meaning and one different meaning (C and D), while Albanian has two corresponding meanings (A and B). What's the best way to display these results? Ideally, on one page, so the user can choose what suits them best with the fewest number of clicks.
  2. An editor is adding a word. He browses for the meaning he needs and can't/doesn't take time to think up of synonyms or other language words that would lead him to the meaning, so he doesn't find one. He adds another meaning worded differently than the one already in the dictionary.
These are just a couple of different things I don't even know how to begin thinking about and that need some serious brainstorming, at least on my part :) --Cabrilo 08:54, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

I read a couple of interesting papers at MT summit this year on creating sense-distinguished lexicons from dictionaries and monolingual corpora, probably it would be worth looking them up:

  • Marcus Sammer and Stephen Soderland (2007) "Building a Sense-Distinguished Multilingual Lexicon from Monolingual Corpora and Bilingual Lexicons". Proceedings of Machine Translation Summit XI, 2007

Actually, they seem to have them online here, so just take a look. - Francis Tyers 10:46, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

I think that it is not so hard to implement relations inside of something-similar-to-categories: from something like "augmentative", to just "connected". Also, some kind of algorithm which would calculate "the closest word in the target language" shouldn't be hard to implement, too. With those implementations there wouldn't be a sense to add interwiki links to words, but only to meanings. --Millosh 11:44, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Wiktionary is a dictionary, not a translation engine. We should think about the best way to structure data, not about algorithm implementations. Here is one set of problems which dictionary has to describe:
Here are two sets words in English with translations in sr/hr/bs/sh: professor (profesor, profesorka/profesorica; plural profesori, profesorke/profesorice) and Estonian (only in the ethnonym meaning: Estonac, Estonka; pluar Estonci, Estonke). Meanings are:
  1. general meaning: profesor, profesori, Estonci (professor, Estonian)
  2. general meaning only when gender is not known: Estonac (profesor, profesori, Estonci inherit it from the meaning above; professor, Estonian inherit it from general meaning)
  3. masculine meaning: profesor, profesori, Estonac, Estonci (professor, Estonian inherit it from general meaning)
  4. feminine meaning: profesorka/ica, profesorke/ice, Etonka, Estonke (professor, Estonian inherit it from general meaning)
In all cases, it will be translated as "professor" or "Estonian". This means that we need a way how to describe such cases. Of course, this is only an example for possibly more complex situations in other languages (I may imagine some problems in non-Indo-European languages). --Millosh 11:44, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
So, according to this situation we have to have four meanings in all languages. However, if some language has strictly rules for, for example, a professor with hat or without hat and uses the first form in general meaning -- we should add that meaning in all languages, too. --Millosh 11:44, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Francis, I looked at the paper. I think that it may be useful as an approach for automatic generation of database, but we have to think how to structure our database, firstly. Also, we have a number of dictionaries which are partially tagged and we should use them firstly. Also, there are partial translations of WordNet in Serbian (I'll find the url and I'll send it here). --Millosh 11:44, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
BTW, what do you think about making a page with resources with links and descriptions? Maybe Wiktionary:Resources)? --Millosh 11:44, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Also, dictionary which I mentioned is free, but we should talk about that in Zagreb. --Millosh 11:44, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
Good idea (Wiktionary:Resources). - Francis Tyers 13:47, 20 November 2007 (UTC)

Bot policy uredi

Hello. To facilitate steward granting of bot access, I suggest implementing the standard bot policy on this wiki. In particular, this policy allows stewards to automatically flag known interlanguage linking bots (if this page says that is acceptable), which form the vast majority of such requests. The policy also enables global bots on this wiki (if this page says that is acceptable), which are trusted bots that will be given bot access on every wiki that allows global bots.

This policy makes bot access requesting much easier for local users, operators, and stewards. To implement it we only need to create a redirect to this page from Project:Bot policy, and add a line at the top noting that it is used here. Please read the text at m:Bot policy before commenting. If you object, please say so; I hope to implement in two weeks if there is no objection, since it is particularly written to streamline bot requests on wikis with little or no community interested in bot access requests. Carsrac 18:34, 1 novembar 2009 (UTC)

Implemented. —Pathoschild 15:01:59, 19 april 2010 (UTC)

Call for image filter referendum uredi

The Wikimedia Foundation, at the direction of the Board of Trustees, will be holding a vote to determine whether members of the community support the creation and usage of an opt-in personal image filter, which would allow readers to voluntarily screen particular types of images strictly for their own account.

Further details and educational materials will be available shortly. The referendum is scheduled for 12-27 August, 2011, and will be conducted on servers hosted by a neutral third party. Referendum details, officials, voting requirements, and supporting materials will be posted at Meta:Image filter referendum shortly.

Announcing Wikipedia 1.19 beta uredi

Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.

The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:

  • Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
  • New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
  • The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
  • Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
  • Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
  • Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
  • The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
  • More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
  • Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
  • Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
  • Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.

Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.

Note that this cluster does have SUL but it is not integrated with SUL in production, so you'll need to create another account. You should avoid using the same password as you use here. — Global message delivery 16:32, 15 januar 2012 (UTC)

Update on IPv6 uredi

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it, as well as the full version of this announcement on Meta)

The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to do limited testing of IPv6 on June 2-3. If there are not too many problems, we may fully enable IPv6 on World IPv6 day (June 6), and keep it enabled.

What this means for your project:

  • At least on June 2-3, 2012, you may see a small number of edits from IPv6 addresses, which are in the form "2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334". See e.g. w:en:IPv6 address. These addresses should behave like any other IP address: You can leave messages on their talk pages; you can track their contributions; you can block them. (See the full version of this announcement for notes on range blocks.)
  • In the mid term, some user scripts and tools will need to be adapted for IPv6.
  • We suspect that IPv6 usage is going to be very low initially, meaning that abuse should be manageable, and we will assist in the monitoring of the situation.

Read the full version of this announcement on how to test the behavior of IPv6 with various tools and how to leave bug reports, and to find a fuller analysis of the implications of the IPv6 migration.

2011 Picture of the Year competition uredi

македонскиnorskpolski

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2011 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We are interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year 2011. Help decide about more than $10 million of Wikimedia donations in the coming year uredi

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it)

Hi,

As many of you are aware, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees recently initiated important changes in the way that money is being distributed within the Wikimedia movement. As part of this, a new community-led "Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC) is currently being set up. Already in 2012-13, its recommendations will guide the decisions about the distribution of over 10 million US dollars among the Foundation, chapters and other eligible entities.

Now, seven capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy community members are sought to volunteer on the initial Funds Dissemination Committee. It is expected to take up its work in September. In addition, a community member is sought to be the Ombudsperson for the FDC process. If you are interested in joining the committee, read the call for volunteers. Nominations are planned to close on August 15.

Wikidata is getting close to a first roll-out uredi

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.)

As some of you might already have heard Wikimedia Deutschland is working on a new Wikimedia project. It is called m:Wikidata. The goal of Wikidata is to become a central data repository for the Wikipedias, its sister projects and the world. In the future it will hold data like the number of inhabitants of a country, the date of birth of a famous person or the length of a river. These can then be used in all Wikimedia projects and outside of them.

The project is divided into three phases and "we are getting close to roll-out the first phase". The phases are:

  1. language links in the Wikipedias (making it possible to store the links between the language editions of an article just once in Wikidata instead of in each linked article)
  2. infoboxes (making it possible to store the data that is currently in infoboxes in one central place and share the data)
  3. lists (making it possible to create lists and similar things based on queries to Wikidata so they update automatically when new data is added or modified)

It'd be great if you could join us, test the demo version, provide feedback and take part in the development of Wikidata. You can find all the relevant information including an FAQ and sign-up links for our on-wiki newsletter on the Wikidata page on Meta.

For further discussions please use this talk page (if you are uncomfortable writing in English you can also write in your native language there) or point me to the place where your discussion is happening so I can answer there.

Fundraising localization: volunteers from outside the USA needed uredi

Please translate for your local community

Hello All,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team have begun our 'User Experience' project, with the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries outside the USA and enhancing the localization of our donation pages. I am searching for volunteers to spend 30 minutes on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real-time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)

By helping us you are actually helping thousands of people to support our mission of free knowledge across the world. Please sing up and help us with our 'User Experience' project! :) If you are interested (or know of anyone who could be) please email ppena@wikimedia.org. All countries needed (excepting USA)!

Thanks!

Be a Wikimedia fundraising "User Experience" volunteer! uredi

Thank you to everyone who volunteered last year on the Wikimedia fundraising 'User Experience' project. We have talked to many different people in different countries and their feedback has helped us immensely in restructuring our pages. If you haven't heard of it yet, the 'User Experience' project has the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries (outside the USA) and enhancing the localization of our donation pages.

I am (still) searching for volunteers to spend some time on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

Convert complex templates to Lua to make them faster and more powerful uredi

(Please consider translating this message for the benefit of your fellow Wikimedians)

Greetings. As you might have seen on the Wikimedia tech blog or the tech ambassadors list, a new functionality called "Lua" is being enabled on all Wikimedia sites today. Lua is a scripting language that enables you to write faster and more powerful MediaWiki templates.

If you have questions about how to convert existing templates to Lua (or how to create new ones), we'll be holding two support sessions on IRC next week: one on Wednesday (for Oceania, Asia & America) and one on Friday (for Europe, Africa & America); see m:IRC office hours for the details. If you can't make it, you can also get help at mw:Talk:Lua scripting.

If you'd like to learn about this kind of events earlier in advance, consider becoming a Tech ambassador by subscribing to the mailing list. You will also be able to help your fellow Wikimedians have a voice in technical discussions and be notified of important decisions.

Proposal of a pronunciation recording tool uredi

Hello, Rahul21, a developer, offers to develop a pronunciation recording tool for Wiktionary, helped by Michael Dale as part of GSoC. The tool would allow to record and add audio pronunciations to Wiktionary entries while browsing them (see background discussion on Wiktionary-l). Please read and comment the proposal! Regards, Nemo 22:43, 9 april 2013 (UTC)

Hello!

There is a new request for comment on Meta-Wiki concerning the removal of administrative rights from long-term inactive Wikimedians. Generally, this proposal from stewards would apply to wikis without an administrators' review process.

We are also compiling a list of projects with procedures for removing inactive administrators on the talk page of the request for comment. Feel free to add your project(s) to the list if you have a policy on administrator inactivity.

All input is appreciated. The discussion may close as soon as 21 May 2013 (2013-05-21), but this will be extended if needed.

Thanks, Billinghurst (thanks to all the translators!) 05:17, 24 april 2013 (UTC)

[en] Change to section edit links uredi

The default position of the "edit" link in page section headers is going to change soon. The "edit" link will be positioned adjacent to the page header text rather than floating opposite it.

Section edit links will be to the immediate right of section titles, instead of on the far right. If you're an editor of one of the wikis which already implemented this change, nothing will substantially change for you; however, scripts and gadgets depending on the previous implementation of section edit links will have to be adjusted to continue working; however, nothing else should break even if they are not updated in time.

Detailed information and a timeline is available on meta.

Ideas to do this all the way to 2009 at least. It is often difficult to track which of several potential section edit links on the far right is associated with the correct section, and many readers and anonymous or new editors may even be failing to notice section edit links at all, since they read section titles, which are far away from the links.

Trademark discussion uredi

Hi, apologies for posting this in English, but I wanted to alert your community to a discussion on Meta about potential changes to the Wikimedia Trademark Policy. Pywikipedia is migrating to git uredi

Hello, Sorry for English but It's very important for bot operators so I hope someone translates this. Pywikipedia is migrating to Git so after July 26, SVN checkouts won't be updated If you're using Pywikipedia you have to switch to git, otherwise you will use out-dated framework and your bot might not work properly. There is a manual for doing that and a blog post explaining about this change in non-technical language. If you have question feel free to ask in mw:Manual talk:Pywikipediabot/Gerrit, mailing list, or in the IRC channel. Best Amir (via Global message delivery). 13:45, 23 jul 2013 (UTC)

HTTPS for users with an account uredi

Greetings. Starting on August 21 (tomorrow), all users with an account will be using HTTPS to access Wikimedia sites. HTTPS brings better security and improves your privacy. More information is available at m:HTTPS.

If HTTPS causes problems for you, tell us on bugzilla, on IRC (in the #wikimedia-operations channel) or on meta. If you can't use the other methods, you can also send an e-mail to https@wikimedia.org.

IMPORTANT: Admin activity review uredi

this message in other languages: Admin activity review/2013/Notice to communities

Hello. A new policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc) was recently adopted by global community consensus (your community received a notice about the discussion). According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on smaller wikis. To the best of our knowledge, your wiki does not have a formal process for removing "advanced rights" from inactive accounts. This means that the stewards will take care of this according to the new admin activity review here.

We have determined that the following users meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for more than 2 years):

  1. Francis Tyers (administrator)
  2. Id‏‎ (administrator)

These users will receive a notification soon, asking them to start a community discussion if they want to retain some or all of their rights. If the users do not respond, then their advanced rights will be removed by the stewards.

However, if you as a community would like to create your own activity review process superseding the global one, want to make another decision about these inactive rights holders, or already have a policy that we missed, then please notify the stewards on Meta-Wiki so that we know not to proceed with the rights review on your wiki. Thanks, --MF-Warburg (razgovor) 16:21, 23 septembar 2013 (UTC)
